Post-Wash a Hair Transplant Procedure

A hair wash after a hair transplant operation is crucial and requires precise adherence to specific steps to avoid damage to the donor and recipient areas.

This is part of our article on post-hair transplant guidelines and tips, but because of its importance, we’ve written this article separately.

Note: After the operation, the nursing staff at the hospital will wash your hair for the first time, so we are talking here about the hair washing that you will do at home using the shampoo and products provided to you by the hair transplant clinic.

The Right Way to Wash Hair After Implanting it:

Please adhere to the following instructions starting from the third day and for up to two weeks after the hair transplant procedure:

First: moisturize your scalp with the special cream provided by your hair transplant clinic about an hour before washing your hair.

This cream has two main benefits:

  • It moisturizes and soothes the scalp, protecting the transplanted area from dryness when exposed to air.
  • It helps the surgical scabs fall off.

To begin:
1. Put on sterile gloves and apply the cream to your scalp in small drops.
2. Then, gently pat it in with your fingertips before distributing it evenly over the transplanted area. You will feel your skin refreshed after the first wash.

Second: You must apply the shampoo to your hands, rub them together until a light foam forms, then gently massage it into your hair.

Third: Avoid hot water; hair should be washed with lukewarm or slightly cool water, provided the shower’s water pressure is controlled.

Fourth: When washing your hair after a hair transplant, it’s important to gently massage your scalp with your fingertips (avoid rubbing or pressing), and as much as possible, avoid scratching it with your nails.

Fifth: You should dry your hair gently with a soft towel.

Sixth: The most important point regarding washing your hair after a hair transplant is to avoid touching your scalp except when washing it.

For the first 15 days after your hair transplant, the skin in the transplanted area is highly sensitive, and therefore, touching the scalp can dislodge the new hair follicles and cause them to be pulled out of place.

Seventh: Do not try to remove any scabs by scratching or rubbing, as this may cause cuts. Don’t worry, they will fall off on their own within 14 days at the maximum.

Once the surgical scabs have disappeared within 14 days, you can use any shampoo you prefer and dispense with the products provided by the hair transplant hospital/clinic.

Helpful Tips on How to Wash the Hair Transplant Area:

Here are some additional tips for the post-wash hair transplant procedure to ensure the best results:

  1. It’s better to shower daily (only once, not twice).
  2. Especially during the first ten days after the procedure, using only water without shampoo is not sufficient, as this can lead to dandruff that may adhere to the hair roots, increasing the likelihood of the transplanted hair follicles falling out.
  3. If you experience itching in the donor area, you can apply pure olive oil (three to four times daily).
  4. Avoid exposing your head to sunlight and stay away from steam rooms during the first month.

A quick note: The timeframe for everything mentioned above may vary from person to person, but it’s recommended to follow these instructions for 10 to 14 days.
